Story Submission by Daniel, Age 35

It feels just like yesterday that I lost my twin brother to suicide.

Depression isn’t obvious and it certainly isn’t a topic many people like to admit they are struggling with inside. Looking back to New Years Day in 2003 my life took a complete somersault and at 19 years old I can openly admit I had no idea how to react and how to digest what had just happened. I didn’t see any signs; no unusual activities or change in personality.

Growing up my brother and I had a huge passion for cars; my family would say it was almost an obsession. There was something about getting our hands dirty and working on our vehicles that kept us wanting more.

Sadly my brother’s dream of owning a Mitsubishi Evo 8 never made its way into the garage, but I worked two jobs to make his dream a reality and 18 months later I had the keys to my very own Evo 8 MR in gunmetal grey. It was then that I realised I was living the dream that we both envisioned.

With the support of my family I wouldn’t be where I am today. I struggled for many years to accept my changed reality but I made the promise to myself that I will live my life to my fullest and not let a day go by in vain and live with no regrets. Scars and wounds heal but when you lose someone so close to you, you see the world from a different point of view.

For anyone that is struggling with depression or anxiety the best advice I can give to you is that you are not alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Think of the ones you would be leaving behind and for just 10 seconds think how hard it would be for your family and friends to go on without you.
