Story Submission by AJ, Age 25
I want to share this story because car culture did not only save me from the spiralling trap which is depression, but also pulled me out the darkest time in my life.
In 2012 I lost my mother. She was the one who always I always confided in whenever I couldn’t put what was going through mentally in words she always understood.
After she passed I felt a huge void; just emptiness. I lost my confidence in my work and I lost the motivation that kept me going. So I ended just secluding myself from everyone; I went quiet for months on end.
One day I went for a drive just to clear my head, which is something I’ve always loved doing, and stumbled upon a car meet and decided to pull up and park. The people I met randomly had the biggest impact ever. They introduced me to a car club and I slowly started to become more and more social.
I still feel anxious from time to time but I’m glad I went for a drive that day.
